August 2025: Overthinking "Worrying is like a rocking chair: it gives you something to do, but doesn't get you anywhere"

Hi, my name’s Whit, and I’m an overthinker. Although there are some advantages to striving for perfection in each decision, in the end, indecision can be a massive time suck and just lead you to a feedback loop of stress and worry

I didn’t reach this breakthrough overnight. I’m currently listening to: The Art of Letting Go: Stop overthinking, break negative cycles, and embrace peace. Yes, go on… The way the book starts is by describing a scenario of being in a grocery store and being unable to decide which brand of an item to purchase. Wow, that sounds like somebody I know. Sometimes I have to take a lap around the store and ponder which brand of coffee filter or salad dressing to choose. What about endless scrolling on streaming providers? All the movies in the world at my fingertips, yet I can’t seem to find one to watch. Don’t even get me started on which restaurant to dine. I know I’m not alone out there. The notion of making the wrong decision taunts me while the satisfaction of making the right one gives me something to strive for. There’s nothing better! I used to think that being decisive was synonymous with being impulsive but maybe those who don’t get hung up on every outcome are onto something.

The Power of Letting Go

“Surrender is like a fish finding the current and going with it.”

- Mark Nepo

The word Surrender in my mind has always been associated with giving up or losing a battle. If you surrender, you’re quitting. Now, I think of it as letting go and relinquishing control. Going with the flow. Surrendering means you’re moving forward rather than getting stuck on an outcome that’s just not meant to be. Sometimes it’s harder to surrender than it is to fight. Change is the only constant in life and in order to survive, you have to always be moving forward and not get stuck in the past. So, when you find yourself overthinking or getting hung up on a decision or an outcome, just pick one and keep moving. If it’s the wrong choice, learn from it, and don’t beat yourself up. From one overthinker to another, thanks for listening.

So Long Summer, It’s Been Nice Knowing You

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall"

F. Scott Fitzgerald

Although I’m always sad to see summer go, this time of year is truly one of the best. I’m trying to wrap my head around all the travel and all that I’ve been fortunate enough to experience since May and how fast it all went by. Looking forward to a slower pace and more time at home these next few months as we welcome our baby girl. Beautiful weather, good food, and college football Saturdays. Wishing everyone a wonderful start to the fall and back to school season!
